“this one goes out to…”

17 07 2004

“i took seven looks but i counted too fast”
& now i’m frozen in that hesitation
any breaking movement could as easily
make overkill as insufficiency.

i saw what your eyes screamed; i heard
you dancing barefoot on the carpet floor;
in non-linguistic ways a certainty
like a tiny flame that won’t expire consoles me

but won’t be woven into shapes my tongue
could trace along your shoulder-blade.
“does anybody have a knife?” we carve
our names in trees to change the living world

almost in revenge for when it changes us
but leaves no scar. into the dizzy air
that i draw in, and in, and out again
all that you are is tattooed inklessly .
