annabel’s igloo and the toasters of doom

21 02 2007

in case anyone out there was wondering what syracusians do with all this snow, here are a few examples. the first, of course, is my favorite. this is annabel, and with annabel, annabel’s igloo. annabel lives next door to me, has a front-porch bluegrass band when the weather’s cooperative, and when it’s uncooperative, annabel builds igloos. best of all, annabel let me crawl in her igloo. it’s all snug and tight in there–i had to wriggle like a worm to get in and out, and got snow into every corner of my playclothes–but bright, too, at least on sunny days. either light or somehow the impression of light gets through, so it isn’t nearly as claustrophobic as you’d imagine.

::adds “crawl inside igloo” to list of seized-experiences that only the far north can offer::
annabel's igloo i told annabel i was going to blog about her igloo, & that we were going to make her famous, that soon enough she would be fielding calls from celebrities asking her to make them igloos. help me make good on that plan by popping over to annabel’s blog, down from the mountain, to say hello, especially if you know some celebrities to recommend her to, but even if you don’t. plus, if you go to her blog and scroll down, you will see pictures of people inside her igloo. and that’s just cool.

when i haven’t been in igloos lately (squee igloos!) i’ve been drafting the handbook chapter of my dissertation, learning that it is possible to tastily and non-lethally combine red wine and jello-shots, sinking a few pool balls–only a few, but those few exactly when the only person in this town who’s ever had a thing to say about my pool game was watching the table, finding eglute’s house in time for homemade sweet-potato-chicken soup and an hour of making vasaris giggle with her and _aurelius, studying at panera with jill & sangeethadevi, learning about anime, hazing jill about manga, baking more cookies, partaking of pooh_gal‘s fantabulous cooking, being spoiled completely rotten by her-and-gr’s ridiculously expensive but more ridiculously delicious vanilla-infused cognac (o m g & also good thing i wasn’t driving home that night), & planning slumber parties with clementine (last night’s entertainment–we decided on wine and fuzzy jammies and the necessity of prank-calling cute boys. so if you don’t hear from us, that might mean you’re not cute enough to make the cut. or it means you’re not a boy. or it means we don’t have your phone number). i have also been introduced to the completely unnecessary but strangely desirable pirate toaster (okay, there’s not technically any “doom” involved, although there is an inexplicable g’n’r reference, which might stand in for doom in a pinch) by jessica_dwg, who has undertaken a personal challenge to ensure that i am never bored. speaking of personal challenges, having let sarenity totally slide the past month and a half, i have allowed l_stboy to goad me into giving up not-writing poetry for lent, so expect to see crap over there with my name on it.

oh, and in other evidence of things other syracusians do with the snow, i found this about halfway down my street today. it’s been there all day, waiting.
innocent arsenal clearly, someone has plans. since i’ve only had studious people over so far today, i haven’t been in the right company to be so rude as to go and pillage the neighbors’ plannage, but boy am i tempted.

& p.s. my prospectus has officially finally been officially approved so i’m officially a dissertator officially writing an official dissertation. hence the icon.

I love the igloo pic! And you probably shouldn’t have made the snowball stash public…I’ve got a mind to go down there and burn off some lingering mother-in-law related aggression!

don’t worry, most of my friends-list is way not local enough to have impinged upon your chances for snowball absconding.
i’m fresh out of mothers-in-law, though; can i help fling stuff at yours? 🙂

I remember building igloos in Virginia as a child, so it’s not something that can ONLY be done in the north. Although, we were presumably smaller then and required smaller igloos (not that anyone in my family was particularly small, even as a child) and there did used to be more snow in VA, so perhaps it would be difficult to build an appropriately-sized igloo there in the present day…
Yay to the prospectus!

you were around for them. there was a huge storm on veteran’s day in 1987, and i built an igloo (and tunnels, which I remember being tres cool). now, i was very short then 🙂 but the snow was up to my chest. it was fabulous 🙂

Sounds lke you’re having a better time with your weather than I am. Here, it’s just mounds of unbreakable ice EVERYWHERE. It’s supposed to be 40(ish) here all week though, hopefully some of it will go away.
Good practice for my trip to Michigan in 2 weeks though

try to stay warm, darling.
i mean, if you want the fluffy piley-up crazy kind, i can try to shove it southward, but, frankly, i’ve always been a shitty weatherwitch, and if that were going to work it would have worked before now. 😉

In addition to the pirate toaster, Gizmodo has my favorite knife rack.

Was the vanila cognac in question Navan? that stuff is tasty and potent. I speak from experience.
