in case

you’re wondering, yes, i’m still alive. i wrote this today; it shows a little bit of where i’ve been (although it’s not that new a story). i put it up at seanachaia, but ppl rarely wander there, self included, so for the sake of validating my existence for you darlings, i’ll leave it right here too:

weathering

each noon exactly, for a year or more
the church on roosevelt has chimed
‘o come o come emmanuel,’ a loud
demand thrust through the wooden
walls of these old houses, but no child
has arrived. instead, the mother, still
herself unborn, left us too, our hands
too cold inside these mittens to do more
than cling to one another, dust-specks
dwarfed by a white sky burning
like an unexpected fall that snags
your coat and slams your back down
bare against the ice. we’re living in
our grandfathers’ winter, the one where
every walk is uphill both directions,
trying to recall the words for ‘miracle’
and ‘resurrection,’ but the ink-strokes
scatter crow-like in the snow.

this would be easier to dream, you say,
for a believer, but i’m not so sure. faith
would need another little burial each day
the notes fade with the cradle empty
and it’ll be some months before
the earth is soft enough to dig.

It’s lovely, and good to hear your voice. I’d voice post it if you have no objection.

I’ve missed you. And it’s brilliant. And it makes me angry that life’s toughest journeys yield the best poetry. damn happiness 😉
