the good news

16 03 2008

after an aborted attempt yesterday–although i stood and watched her sleep for a little while & felt really good about even that bit, because sleeping is such a good, healthy thing to do–i went back over to university hospital today to visit with tammy, who i found iv’d and plugged into various tubes and also plugged in to her cell phone’s earpiece so she could talk to whoever called without having to reach for the phone with her broken hands, smiling and chatting and talking about school & the kids & laptops & her teenage sons fighting over cars & who’s sitting for the baby & how nice the little pain-dosing button is & how annoying is a circulation-sock with a hole for your toes to poke out of! a couple of her cousins came by to catch her up on gossip from home, speculate artistic-visions about the movie they’re putting together, talk about sexy men, & braid her hair, & we got a picture of that on her cell that i hope circulates, because it’s very cute, & does a good job i think of putting behind her all the fear & pain & hours & hours of surgical procedures that after the fact they said she almost didn’t survive.

she looks great, frankenstein stitches down her shoulder & metal wrist-stablizing bars & all (those are just the little fixes; the major stuff isn’t fit to share with company!), & says they’ve told her another week or so of living in the ortho unit & they’ll move her down to rehab for a few more weeks before they send her home, so her family’s going to be doing a lot of schedule-juggling and her friends a lot of kid-housing for a while yet. but they get to keep her. surgeries are done. healing will hurt and take a long time, but it’s going to happen.

see? sometimes there really is good news.

I’m so happy to hear this update – I can’t imagine what it’s like to have your whole world turned sideways like that. Thanks for posting the good news.
