good morning, new america.

(i woke up to a flurry of in-the-night texts, from my mom: “come on, virginia,” and “we went blue!”; from SK-L: “thank your mom for virginia”; from the kiwi in her far-off land “yay obama! go america!”)

for the first time in a long time, i wouldn’t mind telling strangers on the global web where i’m from (and wouldn’t expect brutal & deserved hazing from my friend jason in canadia). but there won’t be any internet strangers, because it’s all-day school and i don’t actually have a class plan in hand because i fell asleep in a haze of blue and red shapes and numbers (and t giving me civics lessons in what it means to live in a federation) instead. gotta go teach the children–and this morning it feels possible that trying to make them into thinkers might really get them farther instead of only getting snickers over six-packs. there really is still good out there, and good work to be done.

Beautiful day, isn’t it?
Also, there is a little tiny hope for my Georgia after all. Overnight, the totals went from something like 56/44 for McCain to 53/46, with early votes from several of the largest counties not yet counted, as it turns out. So, Obama won’t win Georgia, but it’ll be closer than it’s been for a Democrat in quite some time, and I am choosing to call that progress.
