nothing like the desert

29 11 2008

ok, not nothing: the rooms full of friends and wine and re-purposed furniture and conversation and delectable food (who says i have to be flown out to the gourmet chef’s house for thanksgiving meal-ingredients to involve port and gallons of (hand whipped) cream and unpronounceable mushrooms?) and silly behavior and being banned from the kitchen were all very familiar, and a lovely time was had by all (or at least almost all–i saw a little crying from mandala, but she’s 6, and shy, and these things happen). but the snow falling merrily outside the window right now is nothing like that desert wonderland, and as i sit here curled in sweats & flannel around this machine (grading papers, of course, as a change from thanksgiving, when if i wasn’t stirring something or putting it into my face i was on the floor next to a giant crate full of portfolios) with a mug of tea at hand, sandy bird-watching walks and rocky cliff-face saguaro hikes and blinding sunlight and margaritas and that infinite expanse of sky seem like pictures from some other lifetime. i hope those of y’all who did make it to phoenix this year had (or are still having!) a soul- and skin-warming visit, & if you find yourself with excess, send a bit my way. i’m in good company, and i really have learned to find the austere colors of this season deeply beautiful, but the chill gets in the bones & likes to stay.

I carved your Turkey into tercets
not nothing:
rooms full
and delectable
cream and unpronounceable behavior
banned from the kitchen
a lovely time
crying mandala,
6,
and shy things happen
snow nothing like
that wonderland,
i sit around this machine
stirring it into my face
giant portfolios
a mug of tea
watching walks
and rocky hikes
blinding margaritas
that infinite expanse
some other lifetime
still soul- and skin
you find my way
good company,
the austere season
deeply beautiful,
the chill
the bones.
